5 must dos when doing an interior mall repaint

Working in high traffic public areas is never easy. But everything needs painting at some point even malls.

Here are some tips we have found to bring success when undertaking major repaints inside shopping malls.

Do it at night time

Small repainting can be done during the day by careful management of the workzone and people. When it comes to a significant mall repaint, always do it at night time or after business hours. While hourly rates are higher at this time, productivity is actually very good as teams are away from many of the usual distractions of modern society.

Keep in mind that night shift takes a bit of getting used to- a company familiar with this will have checks and balances to ensure their safety and quality systems work the same during the night hours.

Slow right is better than fast wrong

Often its tempting to put a large team in and complete a huge amount of work in a short time. In our experience we have found its most successful to start with a small team and bed into the site. Through the centre of the project the team size can be ramped up before dropping back to a smaller team for the final stages. This way the impact on the site is minimised and the tenants hardly know anything is happening.

Small areas

In typical painting projects you target a substantial area at a time to get maximum efficiency. A team experienced with mall interior repaints will know this can quickly create many issues- the team should focus on starting and finishing small zones before moving on to the next area.

The team should also have a no defects philosophy so that when areas are complete, they never need to be revisited. Leaving a big defects trail will create impact on the tenants and drag out the completion of the project.

Manage the tenants

Taking a proactive approach to tenant management is critical to the success of the project. While the centre management should manage this primarily, having the team leader aware of what tenants are the most likely to create some challenges is vital to making the project run smooth. Popping in for a quick giday in the morning and perhaps buying the odd coffee from the tenant goes a long way to keeping everyone smiling.

Aim for morning perfection

With a big mall repaint, everything revolves around the morning. If the centre isn’t open for trade in the morning then there’s going to be a lot of unhappy people. A good team will understand this and have a continual focus to keep everything clean, tidy and safe for tomorrows business.

Repainting malls is not an easy task but if you follow the right steps you can dramatically increase your chances of success. Like all projects, put in the time up front planning and mitigating the risks ahead of time.
